How the pay matrix works
Your level is set by your post and your cell by your years of service. Each cell is a 3% increment on the one below it, rounded to the nearest ₹100, so level 1 runs ₹18,000, ₹18,500, ₹19,100, ₹19,700 and upward. A promotion moves you across to the next level; an annual increment moves you down one cell within it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the current DA rate for central government employees?
60% of basic pay, effective 1 January 2026. The Union Cabinet approved this instalment in April 2026 and the Finance Ministry issued the office memorandum on 22 April 2026.
When is the next DA hike?
The instalment due from 1 July 2026 had not been notified as of 2026-08-27. Press estimates based on AICPI-IW data point to around 63%, but that is a projection. This calculator uses only the notified 60%. Instalments are typically announced several months in arrears with retrospective effect and arrears.
How is 7th CPC salary calculated?
Gross = basic pay (from your level and cell in the pay matrix) + DA at 60% of basic + HRA at 30/20/10% of basic for X/Y/Z cities + transport allowance, with DA also payable on the transport allowance.
What are X, Y and Z cities?
A classification by population used for HRA. X cities (population 50 lakh and above) attract 30% of basic, Y cities (5–50 lakh) attract 20%, and Z cities everything else attract 10%. The rates rose to these levels once DA crossed 50%.
How do I find my pay matrix cell?
Your level is fixed by your post; the cell moves up by one with each annual increment. Cell 1 is entry pay for the level. If you have had four increments in the level, you are on cell 5.
Does this include income tax?
No. Government take-home depends on your NPS or OPS status, CGHS ward entitlement and state professional tax, so a single net figure would be misleading. Put the annual gross into the in-hand salary calculator to see the tax position under both regimes.
